Green juices and green smoothies, you’ve probably heard of them before…
If I asked you to list the difference between the two would you be able to do so? If so, thats great! If not, don’t worry. When I first started making green smoothies I actually thought that they were both the exact same thing.
This just proves that we all start off knowing absolutely nothing. So don’t feel bad if you are a newbie. We are were including myself at some point in time.
Anyways to stay on topic this post is going to cover the main differences between a green smoothie and a green juice.
What’s a Green Smoothie?
A green smoothie is basically a bunch of greens that you throw into a blender with some fruit with some type of liquid and you blend it all up! That’s pretty much all there is to it when it comes to what a green smoothie consists of however there are some important things I want to talk about.
When you blend fruit and veggies together as a smoothie you still keep all the fiber and plant cell walls intact. This is VERY important as fiber has been proven to have all kinds of amazing health benefits for you. The more fiber you have in your diet the healthier you will be.
Fiber also acts as a broom to sweep out your digestive tract and basically does a little bit of house cleaning. If you have trouble pooping then chances are you need more fiber!
One last very important function of fiber is that it helps control absorption of sugars that are found in fruits and veggies. Since it takes our stomach longer to digest a banana, all the sugar in a banana is not sent into our bloodstream and liver all at once. Instead as our stomachs slowly breaks down the cell walls that sugar is slowly released into our body the way it was meant to be in nature.
This is all thanks to the high amounts of fiber found in fresh fruits and vegetables and this is a VERY good thing like I mentioned earlier.

Now lets move on to green juices and check them out.
What’s a Green Juice?
A green juice is basically a bunch of veggies and sometimes fruit tossed into a juicer. The result is a very fine liquid juice that consists of the vitamins and nutrients from whatever you are juicing. If you juice a whole head of kale you are going to be getting lots of good stuff from it.
This is the power of juicing and its a very effective way of getting vitamins, minerals, and nutrients into your body.
However there is one very important thing to consider when you start juicing your fruit. Juicing eliminates the fiber from whatever it is you are juicing. Going back to the banana example, if you juice a banana you will get all that sugar at once. This is NOT good, and this is the primary reason why bottled, canned, and store bought drinks are bad for you.
The solution is to primarily juice veggies with the occasional piece of fruit. Instead of juicing 6 apples, try 1 because if you are not careful you will be putting a lot of sugar into your body all at once.
When it comes to green smoothies and green juices thats pretty much all you need to know. In general green smoothies are better but still don’t underestimate the power of healthy green juices.
My advice would be to have green smoothies on a regular basis and maybe have a green juice every other day. I personally do this myself as juicing takes a lot of time and effort and I don’t have time to be making green juices all day. Nonetheless do what works for you because thats what matters the most.
